Ukrainian Ivan Zavgorodniy (b. 1984) is the alternate principal double bass in the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. From 1990 to 2001, he studied under the award-winning V. Chekalyuk at the Odessa Special Music School. In 2003, Ivan won first place in the international Evgen Koka competition in Kishinev, Moldova. He has also received two first places and one second place in the international competition "Art of the XXI Century" in Kyiv. Ivan graduated in 2006 and was offered a position at the Odessa Music Academy.

From 2003 to 2008, Ivan was employed as a performing musician with the National Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2008, he studied with double bassist and teacher Rinat Ibragimov at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. In September 2009, he placed third in the international ARD competition in Munich. Ivan has been employed as the alternate principal double bass in the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra since August 2011.
